Why the Air Jordan 4 Retro ‘Lightning’ Is a Great Long-term Hold
Another Air Jordan 4 is releasing and it just happens to be a very popular retro model. It’s the ‘Lightning’ colorway and if you remember previous Jordan 4 August releases, then you’ll know this colorway will be a popular one on the aftermarket.
Before we get into the analyses of aftermarket prices for previous Jordan 4 releases, let’s get some details about the upcoming Lightning 4s out of the way.
First of all, at the time of writing this story, stock numbers are unconfirmed for the release. But if you look at past Jordan 4 releases (Cool Grey 4s, Fire Red 4s, White Oreo 4s) you’ll notice that most Jordan 4 releases are general releases, or GRs.
What is a GR?
It’s basically a Jordan that is mass-produced in high stock numbers so more people have a chance to get their hands on it. Jordan does this mainly so anyone who wants to buy a GR has a much higher chance of getting one.
Normally, resellers would consider GRs to be bricks on the aftermarket, but that’s only true if you’re a short-term reseller. If you have the resources and the capital to hold some GRs for more than a few months, you’ll notice a really nice return on your sneakers.
Fire Red 4s
I talk about how great the Air Jordan Fire Red 4s were for long-term resellers because it’s true. These Air Jordans have slowly started to creep up on the aftermarket in terms of sale prices.
For example, if you would’ve bought a large quantity of grade school sizes for retail prices ($140), you’d notice these same sizes are the ones that are selling for nearly $300 on GOAT and StockX.
Keep in mind that it’s only been 9 months since the Fire Red Jordan 4s were released. Imagine what the resale prices will look like after 1 year, especially around Christmas.
The best part about all of this is the Fire Red 4s were extremely easy to obtain in almost every size. Stock numbers were through the roof on this sneaker.
White Oreo 4s
Another recent Air Jordan 4 sleeper was the White Oreo 4s. A ton of people slept on them mainly because they weren’t Jordan 1 Highs. However, Jordan 4s hold a lot of resale value and are starting to compete with Jordan 1 Highs.
With that said, the White Oreo 4s have been doing much better than expected on the aftermarket and it’s only been 4 months since they were released.
Resellers who quickly flipped their pairs are now regretting it because they are watching how big their profit margin could've been.
Prediction for Lightning 4s
Air Jordan Lightning 4s seem like they have more hype surrounding them than White Oreo 4s and maybe even Fire Red 4s.
It’s a colorway we haven’t seen release in a long time and a lot of collectors and resellers will want to get their hands on it. It’s also a very rare colorway for a Jordan 4 to have.
Yes, it’s not the most wearable colorway being that it’s completely yellow, but the rarity of its release and the value of Air Jordan 4s in general right now will propel it forward on the aftermarket.
My prediction is that these sneakers will see a phenomenal rise on the aftermarket after 1 year of their release, probably even sooner than that. Around Christmas time is when we’ll most likely see the first jump in aftermarket prices and then a steady and slow rise from there.
These Jordan 4s are one of the last great GRs to park your money in for the long-term before the Cool Gray 11s release in December. That’s going to be another phenomenal long-term hold.
