Cards will be mass produced
One thing about the 25th anniversary Pokemon Celebrations set is that it will be reprinted and mass produced. You can expect them to be available almost everywhere and prices on the aftermarket won’t initially go up because of that.
Aftermarket prices depend on supply and demand. If you have a huge supply of a product, it won’t matter how high the demand is. Buyers won’t be willing to pay above a certain price to get the product they want because they’ll be able to find it somewhere else cheaper. There’s your economics lesson for the day.
Therefore, for resellers looking to quickly resell packs or cards from this set, you can expect profit margins to be smaller during the first few months of the release. In general, short term resellers should most likely avoid this set because of how easy it will be to obtain.
Aftermarket prices will drop
Aftermarket prices will not go up after release. Instead, they will drop. Even though it’s Q4 and customers will be spending more on items they want, aftermarket prices will fall on the Celebrations set for a few months and even remain stagnant.
Why?
Once again, it’s because it will be printed so heavily that it will be widely available to the public. Buyers won’t turn to the aftermarket to buy the sets when they can just wait to get it in stores or online for retail price.
Demand is there
This is the key factor.
Demand is high for this anniversary set, just like it was for the 20th anniversary set 5 years ago. Elite trainer boxes for that set sell for around $700 right now.
You’re crazy if you don’t think these ETBs won’t do the same kind of numbers in 5 years. That’s why, holding long-term is the name of the game.
Holding this set for a year MIGHT snag you a small return on your investment.
However, holding sealed sets — specifically ETBs and booster boxes — for a few years will allow you to increase your profit margins significantly.
Selling this 25th anniversary set is a long-term investment, not a short term one.
