Pros and Cons of Flipping Tech

A profitable item to flip that needs to be handled with caution

Storyset

Many resellers get started flipping tech. It’s because a lot of us have it just lying around our homes and it retains some of its value.

When it comes to flipping tech, it’s a little different from flipping something like sneakers.

Yes, sneakers wear away over time, fade in color, and deteriorate. However, sneakers do not need updated, go out of date, or have the possibility of a screw loose on the inside ruining them. Those are all tech problems.

Unless your a tech repairman who can fix a lot of different kinds of tech without any help, then you’re going to need someone who can fix your old tech and tell it’s working before you can sell it. This is just one con of selling tech.

Here are a few more cons — and pros — to consider before you start flipping tech.

Cons

Tech goes out-of-date fast. You might think that iPhone you’re using will hold its value for a long time, but it’s more like a car. The moment you leave the store with your new phone, it starts to lose its value.

Also, tech can stop working sometimes for no reason at all. Too much dust might’ve built up in the inner workings and now it just doesn’t work anymore. This happens all the time to old tech products.

Lastly, tech can break after being sold. Maybe it worked when you used it but the minute you ship it out it stops. It could be during the shipping process or when the buyer received the product they damaged it, but now it doesn’t work and no one is to blame but you, the seller.

Pros

One major pro is that it’s almost guaranteed that you have tech lying around your home at any given time. It could be old DVD players, XBOX’s, cellphones, computers, or more. Tech is all around us and just because you stopped using something doesn’t mean it’s not valuable to someone else.

Also, if you bought the item new then you know how it works. That means if you’ve taken good care of your products then you won’t have to worry about selling a broken device.

One thing you can do to make sure your tech works before you put it up for sale is test it out. If it’s a gaming console play it. If it’s a cellphone, charge it. Whatever the item is just make sure you put it to work and try it out before you put it up for sale.

Bottom line

Tech is usually the first item most of us resell but it can be difficult depending on how well that tech works.

That old cellphone you have in your drawer, your old gaming console, or even an old Apple Watch could be making you money instead of just collecting dust in your drawer or closet.
